In the heart of the Cape Winelands, at the gateway to the "Koue Bokkeveld" and "Karoo", lies Ceres - The Eden of the Cape. The valley produces the finest deciduous fruit in South Africa. Also well-known for its fresh and dried fruit, fruit juices and natural spring water. First inhabited by the San and Khoi, thousands of years ago, but after the first Europeans crossed the Witzenberg Range from the Tulbagh Valley in 1729, stock farms were established. As conditions changed and thinly colonised areas became permanently settled, towns were established to serve the needs of farmers. Ceres was founded, and later Prince Alfred Hamlet, Op die Berg, Wolseley and other small towns in the district. Scenic mountain passes are the only gateways to the Ceres valley.

Tulbagh was first seen in 1658 by Pieter Potter, Jan van Riebeeck’s surveyor. First called “Het land van Waveren” or “Roodezand” and later called after the Cape governor, Ryk Tulbagh. This town offers anything from Historical buildings to farms and modern houses.

In 1861 a farmer, Goosen, measured out 90 plots and sold them. In this time Queen Victoria’s son Prince Alfred, visited the Cape Colony, and Goosen decided to name the new town after him.

In 1875 the railway line from Wellington up to the farm Goedgevonden was completed and this point was called Ceres Road Station which served the Ceres area through Michell’s Pass. Residential stands were offered for sale and in 1910 the town was named Wolseley after Sir Garnet Wolseley, the British governor of Natal.
